Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay immediately was captivated with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her life, but was able to spend summers with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer and was inspired to create a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her university. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home for a specific Jury member. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
